Are there issues with various CF boot CD's (Thumbdrives) and Windows 7 or with various graphics cards (laptop and Server)?

I see that FIRE can't be used on a Win 7 box.

Seem to be having a hard time getting any flavor to boot all the way (it goes through various flavors boot screen and then you get the _ in upper left corner and it just sits there but you hear the CD spinning.) Computer has an ATI card in it and I know that lots are based on Nvidia sets.

Is there an out of the box flavor that for sure runs on Win 7. Or I can create a bootable USB thumb also.

Links to the distros are appreciated.

Thanks bunches.

I do have one PC that will not boot with any linux boot cd/thumb I have tried. I am fairly certain that it is a video driver problem as when it gets to the point of trying to load the gui, the screen becomes corrupted.

As far as the Win7 issue, I guess it depends on what you are trying to use the distro for. If you simply are wanting to obtain an image of the physical disk, then the OS installed on the disk would be irrelevant. As long as the distro will boot and can read the physical disk, you should be able to image.

If you are wanting to use the "live response" side that some of these distro's have, then the underlying OS will very much matter as the "live" side is really just a collection of Window's based programs designed to collect information from a running PC.

Why does the OS on the HDD matter? Surely its just data…?

Helix, BackTrack, etc. Anything that comes with DD that you can tweak to mount drives read only will be fine.

A link to several options
http//winfe.wordpress.com/other-forensic-boot-options/

You can use Unetbootin to create a bootable USB from just about any of the ISO files
http//unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

And you can build a WinFE boot disc/USB with Windows 7, but as mentioned, the underlying OS of the computer hard drive shouldn't matter. However, maybe the drivers in a Win7 WinFE boot disc could be the solution.

Are you having the issue on multiple machines or one particular machine that you are testing boot cd's on?

One thing to consider is the CD burning if you are using the same CD/DVD-RW drive and the same type of media is to slow the burning to the lowest setting. I have had issues with boot cds that were created from ISOs burned on the fastest setting and it would hang at weird spots and such. Though if you are having the same issues with the USB boot…

You mention several boot screens. I assume that means that the monitor displays characters, but no graphics, is that correct?

Could be a video issue, but doesn't have to be the card.
Most distro's have the option to use different graphical settings at boottime, did you try these?

If you only want to image a drive, you don't need the GUI, and you can just use dd/dd*rescue from the prompt.

I'm not too proud to say that I am not good with command line things.

Did you ever figure this problem out?

Here are the instructions for creating a Raptor boot USB without having to use unetbootin.

There's always that problem with live CDs. Some will boot perfectly on a particular machine and others won't. It's a problem with the distribution itself, rather than with the machine.
Some of them will only boot up to runlevel 4, which gives you just the command line, and the GUI has to be loaded manually with the 'init 5' or 'xinit' command.
