Hey all,

Was directed towards this story today and and was just wondering what people thought of it in terms of forensic analysis and how it may affect investigations in the future.

Abstract of article

Bacteria can now store information and be used to hold it for many, many years

Although this is a relatively new technology and we dont know if it will scale properly just trying to get some discussion on the issues we may face in the future.

To be honest, I'll wait until it's commercially available at my local electronics store before I'll worry about it.

I know its not available at the min but i'm just wondering what problems as forensic investigators we might face.

I wouldnt think that it would be too hard to kill all the bacteria if a Hard Disk was captured by law enforcement thus destroying all the evidence?

How do you then go about recovering/analysing dead bacteria?

They'll all be in a 3.5" form factor box with a SATA connector on the back … image it the way you image at the moment!

No problem. All forensic software has extensive experience dealing with bugs. lol

I guess in addition to anti-virus software you'll have antibacterial wipes to wipe the data off the drive.

The end-of life for a drive would be an autoclave.
