Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
Over the past couple of weeks we have had a few of these devices submitted, and it seems to be on the increase. Has anyone dealt with these devices before? how have you powere them without the car it came from? what software was used?
I have tried searching but to no avail. Most car manufacturers do the updates themselves so there seems to be no software available.
any help would be appreciated

They are all different. You may get an engineering schematic showing you power requirements. The one I had experience with was from a Landcruiser and had no tracking history whatsoever.
The way we handle them generally depends on the severity of the crime.
However in removing them from the vehicle, the data may already have been compromised. With some vehicles the electronics are distributed and you may only have the display rather than the data.
For low level crime and a known vehicle photographing of the display would suffice. You may need to disconnect the antenna to prevent location updates.
For serious crime the vehicle may be put on a recovery truck and transported to our laboratory.
You will need to quiz the submitting officers to check if they have played with or moved the vehicle. Or you may find the log shows the route to a police station.
Many thanks guys, its definitely given us some information to consider. The photographing and note taking of the Sat Nav in situ seems the most plausible way at the moment.
