Possibly, but not necessarily, lest we forget the "virus/remote control/etc. did it" defense.

Wasn't the Devil himself? ? wink

Depending on the jurisdiction, that can work too.

Hello,

As the others pointed out, it is important to clarify what is meant by "factory reset". On the iPhone for example (models later than 3G), a factory reset will just erase the encryption keys used to encrypt data at rest and generate new ones, making the old data garbage and unreadable.

On the Android, on some models at least, a factory reset does seem to delete everything and re-install the OS but if we physically acquire the data partition with 'dd' or whatever other method you prefer and analyze it with a forensics tool (e.g. TSK) you may find out that most of the "wiped" data is still there (along with your pictures). Of course, it also depends on how the factory reset is implemented. On models I've tested, TRIM wasn't implemented after the wipe, so remnant flash data was still available, on newer models, allegedly, TRIM is automatically enabled and purges old deleted data after a factory reset making data recovery impossible.

I hope someone else, who has had the chance to experiment with several devices, can shed more light on this topic.

Thanks,

Alistair

Hello, i thought i'd post on this thread instead of opening a new one because the issue is quite similar.

Basically i needed a second phone so i unlocked an old nexus s i had via fastboot oem unlock and after that i installed a custom recovery. Once done that, i sent the command "wipe" from the recovery and after that i flashed a custom rom. All the process was done twice because the first time the Rom did not load properly. Now after almost a month of using the new rom i find myself lost because i thought i had some relevant data backupped on dropbox instead i cannot find it. Is there a way to recover some files i had prior to all the process i described?someone could suggest me a software that could do the job?If it could be done with a software, would an expert with the right hardware be able to do that if i bring him the phone physically?

Many thanks
