LOL - see what I mean? lol

No ) three of us (OK hardly representative) say that there are too many and David is just trying to get his vote counted more than once )

To quote Blackadder "All the other captains say it is. I say it isn't." …" )

Seriously, too many (in my mind) forums is certainly stopping me engaging more than I might otherwise.

Paul,

I'm curious as to why the "view posts since last visit" URL isn't helpful in this situation. I use it all the time (it's pretty much the only forum link I do use) in order to keep track of new posts and I'm just wondering why your mileage varies?

Not sure what Hugh is on about re the moved posts but very much agree with him re the number of forums.

Like most forums the moderators will do some maintenance.
Threads will get moved from 'General Discussion' to another sub forum selected by the moderator.

This is what instigated the OP.

I wrote a well reasoned and profoundly insightful post in the thread "Which uni is best for study computer forensic degree in uk?", I thought better of hitting submit and cancelled it.
I came back to it later, it had gone.

Perhaps "This post has been moved" type posts would help in this situation.

Sorry Hugh, I understood what you said - but never saw it as much of an issue )

Jamie, I'll try that link again, used to use it but stopped

edit to say I remember why now - answer a post and you get left in the forum last visited, usually general (which is good) but then you have to navigate back to the "new posts" link so I used to just review what was new in general and not revisit.

To be absolutely honest I don't even recall moving this thread (which may indicate I just moved it without thinking)! Sorry for the incovenience, though, if I do move threads in future I'll make sure to always leave a shadow topic in the original forum.

Understood, thanks.

I have the "view posts since last visit" URL as a bookmark permanently visible in Firefox's bookmarks toolbar and tend to just use that as the only way of entering/viewing/refreshing the site (i.e. a one-click operation which is always available without scrolling). I find it works very well and would definitely recommend it to everyone as the best way of keeping on top of new posts.

Really? It goes to the root of the problem.

Threads are started in GE and then moved out to the burbs where nobody goes and are subsequently forgotten about.

Jamie a shadow of any moved threads would be a great help. Thanks.

Jamie

Another issue has just come up with this.

I visited this morning and noticed about half a dozen new posts overnight I then got distracted (regular occurence). I have just gone back on looked at it an, by design, the posts that where listed as new have now gone (obviously as this is a new visit). As a busy bod I feel that if I wanted to rely on this feature to make sure I dont miss anything then I will fail.

17 forums is just too many to keep my interest - hence I rarely visit anything other than general.

Clearly I'm a lot less busy than you are! D

I don't think that piling everything into the general forum makes sense but I do think there's some room for consolidation. I'll look into it further when I'm back behind a proper PC/network connection later in the month.
