Just trying to finish my MSc dissertation and I am wondering if anyone knows of any case (could be in any country) when geotags from images (or even other files) have been extracted from a phone and used as evidence in court?
I have scoured the law journals and am gradually losing the will to live 😉 Any help would be really appreciated! If I can just find 2 or 3 that would really help. One week until hand-in and I can reclaim my social life.
…….still struggling to find any. I was thinking that maybe criminals have been caught by photographing their drug stashes or drug crops, or at least LE have been able to locate the drugs via the geotags in the phone images.
I'm sure someone on here will have an answer for you, but while you wait, have you tried a search through Google?
Hi Ed,
I've googled and yahoo'd for hours. I did find one case a while back in the US where a crop of drugs was found after the delaer had photogrpahed it on his phone, but I forgot to bookmark it and can't find it again. If I can't find anything then I will just state that there isn't much published. Thanks for your posting Ed.
regards
David
Just a suggestion - you could try phoning CEOP's Operations people.
We've had a few images with GPS coords in them, but nothing's made to an actual prosecution yet. It'll happen though, as the takeup of smartphones increases.
Thank you Ben! )
