Hi all,

I'm at a bit of a crossroads and am seeking some input on what direction to go. I have an old Cellebrite UFED Classic which is no longer being supported. While I currently use Lantern for my IOS devices and some Android devices, I still have a need to be able to acquire and analyze data on non smart phones and others.

Cellebrite has offered me a discount to "trade" in my old unit for a new UFED Touch, albeit at a substantial out of pocket cost.

Since it appears that Lantern and other companies are doing a pretty decent job with IOS and other Smartphones, I'm looking for the best solution for other devices that I encounter.

I would like some input on other products in terms of compatability with devices, ease of use, support, etc. Since I have to spend a small fortune here I want to make sure I'm getting the best product for my dollars.

Thanks in advance!
Dan

If you're looking for great support of the other major smartphone OSs, i.e., Windows and Blackberry, then Oxygen is a great choice. It's what I usually use. If you're talking about feature phones, Oxygen seems to support a lot, but I don't have much personal experience with them, so I can't really make a recommendation.

I think for products like mobile phones you need to put the customer service/support offered by the organisations high on your requirement list.

Although I don't use them, I continually see Ron Serber from cellebrite answering queries on the various forums.

If you have the budget then it's really no question UFED or XRY are the clear leaders by a long long way. My preference is UFED as I think they have better support and better iOS capability (my opinion here).

If you have a trade up option for UFED and you wont be paying the full price for the UFED touch then that would be the best option for you, but what about UFED for PC? That may be cheaper than the upgrade and as you already have a cable set that might be a good option.

Oxygen is not a bad software only option if you want to save a few dollars but my experience with Oxygen shows the data you get can be quite limited compared to UFED/XRY.

I would take a look at Secure View 4. We are a leader in acquisition of feature phones, also our software will also do logical, advanced logical and physical extractions of ALL major OS's. Being one of the first mobile forensic software's we have support for thousands of phones.

I am a police officer and exploit phones all the time. I am trained in almost all of the tools out there today. Yes, Cellebrite and XRY are the "Big Boys" on the block and have most of the government contracts out there, but the smaller companies have made great headway where I feel price point and customer service are more critical than the extra bells and whistles Cellebrite and XRY offer.

I have a Cellebrite available if I need it, but my first go to software is Paraben's Device Seizure. I also use Lantern for IOS devices as well. Paraben has had some problems with past versions, but their newest version 7 is very good. I just exploited an IPhone 4 that was locked and version 7 delivered and bypassed the pin code and dumped all the contents physically. One of the best features of Device Seizure is you get both Logical and Physical acquisitions for one price. Other companies will charge you extra to have the ability to do Physical exploitations. Paraben's customer service is top notch and I have always gotten an answer to any questions and/or assistance whether asking for drivers, cables and any other needs that arise.

When exploiting phones, you should always cross validate by using at least two products to ensure you have gotten as much data off the phone as possible. If I can use more than two products, I will. By purchasing Paraben's Device Seizure, I can still afford Lantern and other software such as Oxygen, etc. for the price of one tool, such as Cellebrite. Depending on your budget, whether a police agency, government or private, more bang for your buck is important. Today, the other companies have caught up with Cellebrite and XRY so if you are the average person exploiting everyday phones and some older feature phones and do not need the ability to do Bluetooth extractions or Chinese phones in Afghanistan, Paraben's Device Seizure will more than meet your expectations. Paraben's software can be loaded on several platforms and there is nothing about the product that is "proprietary" like Cellebrites cables. Paraben's cables can be used with other software and hardware as one end is USB.

If you have other agencies available to you that have a Cellebrite or XRY, see if you can use theirs if you need to cross validate. If you are in a large metro area, see if the FBI has a Regional Computer Forensic Lab. If there is, they will have a Cellebrite Kiosk set up that other agencies can use, so this will save you a lot of money so you can afford Paraben and other products. Let Uncle Sam foot the hefty bill and license renewal for Cellebrite and XRY.

I have been very happy with Paraben and I feel you will be as well. Good luck in any decision you make!

Funny…the poor customer service was one of the main reasons I've stayed away from all things Paraben for many years. Good to see they have learned from past mistakes, although I'm not sure I'd consider Paraben a "small player" on the forensics market wink

Customer support at Paraben was horrific over the past few years, but now, they have finally got their act together.

I renewed my Device Seizure licence for like $400.

What we have to remember here is that physical extraction from IOS is a thing of the past since the 5s came along - unless you jail break it. So how much longer can the big boys charge you huge amounts of money - when they can't access the physical device anymore ? There advantage is becoming smaller!

It is sooooo refreshing to actually have responsive support, yes it is a clunky product, yes it still falls over far more often than it should, but the latest version 7 is a big step away from the earlier releases.

I even got a call from the customer services manager after complaining via email to the sales rep about their licence renewal policy.

Seems they really do care.

For anyone shying away for the support issues of the past, give them another chance - they seem to have picked up the ball.
