I'm conducting some research attempting to discover the prevalence of the Chinese "white-box" or "knock-off" phones sold and distributed by the hundreds of millions every year. Things like fake Nokia's and iPhone's or a mass produced Shenzhen phone.
To all the digital investigators out there how many of these phones have you seen? It seems like much of Southeast Asia as well as West Africa are common areas to find these phones, but I am curious as to the other areas of the world. Europe, South America, South Africa or Russia??
I appreciate any insight and feel free to PM me if you like.
THANKS!

Well we do see them in the UK.
I have a report "TREW MTE - Counterfeit N95 Report" produced for the MTEB in 2008 if you wish to see.
As trewmte states, we do see them in the UK.
Personally I have seen approximately ten, but that would be a very small percentage of handsets examined over the years.

The article contains a few identifiers that may highlight a counterfeit/fake handset eg brand name "Sum Sang", confusing technical details etc
