Hi there im new to the forum. I have jsut come out of a computer and network technology degree and have an interview with the police for as computer crime technician.
You will gather evidence from seized computers and digital mass storage devices in order to support the prevention, detection and investigation of crime.
You will need to have excellent written and verbal communication skills as you will need to prepare and present written and verbal evidence in court.
You will also provide technical expertise and advice to police officers and staff and create and maintain relevant documentation.
The possession of excellent IT skills is a must as well as the ability to work unsupervised.
Can anybody help me out with some questions that might be asked or any advice on the job. I have heard of a forensic computer investigator but im not sure of the the role of a computer crime technician.
Thanks very much.
Technician will almost certainly be the entry level role, and therefore likely involve receiving the evidence, imaging it, perhaps pre-processing/searching it, witness statements to say what you have done etc. Its the role people with little/no experience will often do, with a view to learning the ropes and in the future moving on to become an investigator.
Ah cool. I would really like to get into this area of work so it seems like a great way.
I dont suppose you could think of any questions they will ask?
I would assume you may be asked about your hardware knowledge, general computing knowledge, problem solving and any understanding you have relevant to the law and forensics practise.
Reading this forum and others will certainly help, as im sure your academic background in computing will. Like with all jobs in this industry attention to detail is paramount.
Sounds like a good opportunity, best of luck.
• As an entry level computer crime tech you probably would be expected to acquire forensic images and knowledge of Tools like EnCase or FTK would be helpful.
• You may be asked about chain of custody forms
• How to maintain the integrity of computer evidence.
• Hard drive basics http//
• How data is stored and deleted. What is DOD wipe and how to completely erase data from a drive.
• Various types of file systems, FAT, NTFS VFAT etc.
• Operating system knowledge, Windows, Unix, Linux and MAC-OS etc.
• Basics of cryptography
Wish you all the best
Cheers!
