Hi Guys..
Some help here.

I am on MSc Forensic Computing and I am going to do a Dissertation. But the problem is my Supervisor wants me to do something in Digital Forensics which is related to the Medical Field as well.
I have many other ideas but none of them seem to incorporate both Medical and Computer forensics together.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks..

i'm just spit balling now, so the idea might sound daft, but how about tracking hospital staff misusing drugs for thier own gain by altering recording on an NHS database (if one exists)

Why? is the medical field something that is relevant to you or to your supervisor?

Yeah.. my supervisor used to work on forensics and security before (she in fact has authored some books!) but now the university put her into some computer medical research field. So medical is relevant to her.

Dill your idea seems good.. but i wonder how to get access or know or even speculate about such databases. I know its a weird topic.. been scratching my head for quite a while now.

The problem is if I made up something for the heck of it, the dissertation might seem dumb!!

lets break this disseration down;
Do you have to build a program? if so, why not build a simple SQL database and change records into from local and over a network.

If you do not have to build anything, then why don't you investigate when happens to a system when records are chaged, what logs files are generated, how you would monitor changes and (if you have enough time) research into anti-forensics by means of how a suspect could cover his tracks, this would help into inproving the system. (the NHS probably won't let you have access to thier system so you'll have to make up a sceniro)

Thanks Dill

I get the Idea. But what concerns me is this Is such scenarios related to medical (it could be same in any office/corporate databases)

I have proposed many similar ideas to my supervisor still she doesn't seem impressed. I think what she wants is something that is really specific to medical field and which is not found elsewhere.

I knows its frustrating.. I cannot build a solid case (something specific to medical which involves forensics)

I'd suggest research on the digital artefacts recoverable from medical devices and an account of how they might be captured to forensic standards. Perhaps not the most common requirement, but I once had a case where it looked like I might need to collect data from an MRI machine.

This is a good idea, thank you very much.

Now I guess I need to think about some possible (realistic) scenarios? I have no idea how an MRI machine or ultrasound scanner works (and needless to say, to get access to them !!)
