Hi,
there are a lot of people arguing whether experience (actual field practice) or qualifications is more important in order to establish yourself in the forensics field (computer forensics of course). A good combination of both and a will to learn is an initiative point.
Studying currently into forensics in postgrad, I found the knowledge of PC configuration, networking and low level programming essential. Studies give new ways to look into technologies and it is up to you to read and deep understand the materials. Even within forensics there is place for specialisation.
From my point of view it is the same to start either in law enforcement or in private sector, though the first one implies a like for applying the existing legislations. When you shall present your evidence to support your case in court, your expertise will be questionned so expand as possible both experience and qualifications. (even a certificate in law studies would be a plus, but this depends on personal likes and dislikes).
There are many other interesting books and materials out there, look for conference papers also which are higher in currency and especially books presenting simulated real cases.
