I have been given a hard drive with about 5gb of files on.
Originally when i tried to browse the drive in windows explorer it said the drrive was not formatted.
I then used EasyRecoveryProfessional to try and find the files ( i think the ntfs file listing was either corrupt or damaged.)
That produced no results.
I now have found the drive can be viewed in explorer and the directories browsed … slowly . I think the drive itsself is damaged.
When i try and copy certain files i get the error cannot read from the source file or disk.
Some files copy fine …
Is there a utility to copy the files from the drive which ignores the read errors and copies / moves to the next file regardless of the errors?
Cheers
Well, there is Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier

Or this one Ycopy

Depending if you want to try recovering some more files or just get the "good" ones, one or the other should fit you.

Not sure what you plan to do with this drive, etc, but have you run Scandisk against it?
Recently sorted a very similar problem for me on someone's machine… Seemed a lot of the required OS files had been corrupt.

jaclaz, thank you for the links.
Over the past two years, I've encountered similar issues on 8 different laptops. In 7 out of 8 instances, I've been able to fully recover data (non-OS) files from the defective HDD by installing it back into a laptop and booting with either Bart's PE or Knoppix. Thereafter, I used the respective file explorers found within in each distro to copy the data to an external device, either network or USB.
The "one that got away" would not even recognize in a BIOS on various laptops or desktops w/adapter. We considered sending the drive out, but the user said not to worry.
Good luck.

Hi,
you need to follow the Cardinal rules,
however you first would have created an image of this disk, and then tried for the stuff u had performed.
also, as u have described, the disk seems to have some Bad Sectors on the disk.
check the $BadClust and MFTMirror
