I copied some event logs out of a hard drive to view. The program that I downloaded, Event Log Explorer, will not open them. It says that they are corrupted. Can anyone tell me how to repair the event logs?

Have you tried to open the logs on another Vista system?

Open up event viewer on a Vista system. Click on Windows Logs. Go to Action on the menu bar and choose Open Saved Log… and browse to it.

Have you tried opening the Event Logs using the File, Open Log File, Direct… method. This normally does the trick for me.

Slightly different in Vista - see post above.

On Windows 2000, XP, and 2003, the Event Logs are maintained in a binary format. On systems above 2003, starting with Vista, the logs are maintained as XML, and are differentiated by the .evtx extension (as opposed to just .evt).

However, that being said, if you read the help information that comes with the tool, it appears that it will open the Event Logs if you use the Direct option mentioned above.
