Just need a bit of general advice here.

I'm looking to expand my lab capability and purchase some DAT tape drives.

I've jumped on the net and had a look around at the different standards etc but what I'm finding difficult to find is a clear breakdown of the tape drive sizes and what is the most common.

I'm hoping someone might be able to educate me on the different physical sizes I'm likely to encounter and the corresponding tape drive sizes that I'll need to purchase.

Thanks guys )

Edit Gotta love wiki, why didn't I look there first ) Seems that there are two physical sizes, 3.8mm and 8mm is that correct? Then the challenge is software than can handle the different standards, however I've been told that there is some Linux based software which can read and index any tape format for export….

I've started a thread in the forensic software section about DAT tape software as I have the hardware question covered for now.

DAT is normally 4mm

Exabyte 8mm

Both are helical scan drives

Software look at www.emaglink.com or www.emaglink.co.uk and go to MM/PC. I think UK may deal with Australia

I like "open" standards where documents are not public but you have to e-mail requesting them roll .

The wikipedia article gives more info
