Hi all,

I have a damaged Micro SD card (physically and metaphorically !!) which I have imaged but Helix is reporting all sectors as bad and has zeroed all of the sectors in the image. Does anyone have any funky recovery utilities they would recommend ?

The card itself has a small chip missing off the external case.

Thanks,
Ian

Give PhotoRec a try. It has worked wonders for me, although a physically damaged card may be beyond help.

Many Thanks AWLTPI - tried photorec but it can't read any sectors either. Will try to find out if there are any other potential backups etc I could use.

Ta,
Ian

If it is the "physical" connectors which are giving you trouble, I don't think you are going to be able to read anything from it. It is comparable to the difference between a damaged sector in a HDD and a head crash the first doesn't involve an impossibility of reading, but the second one actually does.

If there is a chip missing, you will have to replace the missing chip with an exact duplicate. As its a MicroSD card, the chip will be tiny, meaning you will require the most delicate of hands to extract/replace it, or send it out to an expert.

Either way, its a real bummer!

Best regards,

Simon

You say your chip is physically damaged and a chip is missing, so I don't think any software will completely recover your files. But give these (free programs) a try

PC INSPECTOR smart recovery

PC INSPECTOR File Recovery

I don't have any ties with the company. I have used their product successfully in the past. I work for a LE agency in the US.

Nice plug in your signature btw.

I cannot see how one can repair a physically damaged microSD, unless it is simply lead breaks.

At 11x15x1mm one would have to have some seriously expensive equipment just to take apart the material without causing further damage.
