Since the challenge is already over (like a month ago) I wanted to know if anyone over here got the answer for the Steganography and Encryption parts.

Yeah, the stego part was really difficult for me. I looked at it with several tools, but did not get very far.

This year's results are supposed to be published, so we might see how the winner's did it.

When I participated, I was told you could request the solutions and they would be sent to you. They only sent the solutions (ie. password recovery, etc) but not the actual methodology. So they told you what was on the CD but not how they got it.

Did they ever post the solutions for 2007? I know that the scores have been posted, but I've never come across the actual solutions. I'm curious to see what kind of suggestions they received for the broken CDs.

They didn't but there's a DEFCON (August 2007) presentation that shows a summary about the challenge.

Here it is Download

When I went to DC3 last year 2007 there was a session there that the top winners went step by step how they completed the challenges. I think it was one of the best sessions that I saw. Looking at the agenda it looks like they have something similar this year.

After a user "emailed" DC3 asking whether the answers were going to be released or not, they answered this

Yes they will, but that might not happen before the end of January or
early February, 2009.

That's because we are devoting our major time and effort to the Digital
Forensic Challenge 2009 creation (to have it out much earlier to give
folks more time for the solutions). So that would put the delay in
presenting the Challenge 2008 solutions. Currently we are not sure if
we would be sending the data out to the participants or just posting the
solutions on the Challenge Web Site. The consideration in sending out
the solutions physically would be a size/cost one, and more limited than
posting to the Web Site. I will be keeping participants informed of
this via email.

It will happen, though. As you noted the Challenge was to attempt to
get new methods for current computer forensic challenges, but even more
it was to share those solution with the computer forensic community.

Any additional question or comments, please do not hesitate to contact
us.

Thank you.

Nobody's probably following this post anymore, but in case someone is, I'm interested in continuing a discussion. I was there at the conference and saw the results of the challenges. Basically the broken CD can partially be solved by making your own sort of a spin table from either a laptop drive (what they used) or an external drive (what I've used).

jhup, why do you want' to know ?

scotticus, this is the solution that hf chose Here. There's another way that consists in using tape + protective skins and nothing else.

Awesome! Thanks! I haven't seen these results yet. I haven't seen what the new challenge even is this year, do they have broken optical discs this time again?
