I think all security related forums have the same problem, especially full disclosure and forums discussing 0days.

If someone were to create an invite only forum for LEO only, you'd miss out on a lot of experience and knowledge. Example I'm not LEO and would not qualify. I'm ex "other government" with a pile of SANS courses and i also develop tools. I've never gone to trial and testified - the problems i've encountered have just been stripped of their SC and ordered to leave on the same day. I've also done some work in anti-forensics, including anonymity and crypto and have a few insights into those areas.

With knowledge comes responsibility - i would never knowingly assist criminals. My post here was purely informational - and rather bland for a reason I suspect that some people with less transparent motives are here to gather information on how to commit crime, and while we should be aware of it we should not be paranoid about it.

Lets play the ball back How can FF (not a new forum) keep criminals out of it?

Let's start by asking if - besides you - a majority (or a relevant minority) of members share the same feelings you have or bring your doubts/claims/ideas directly to Jamie, the one who managed to create and maintain the forum (the "strong brand" was built by him).

And - as a side note - please take note how IMNSHO
1) hijacking this thread
2) accusing another member of criminal acts
is far from being polite, let alone "professional".

Indeed. And, lets not feed the trolls - it only encourages them! wink

Also (meaning absolutely no disrespect to anyone here whatsoever), let's factor in the language barrier here. Rolf has leapt to the conclusion that a question asked is for nefarious purposes, when it is altogether more plausible that a basic question is simply being asked in English by someone who isn't a native speaker (I note OP's location is listed as Palestine). It's very easy to infer meaning which simply isn't present, especially when we try to second guess the motivation behind a question. Assumptions can be dangerous, especially in this line of work!

Getting back on topic, can the OP tell us a little more about the circumstance and context (which OS, file-system, what kind of storage device etc.)? That way it's more likely an informed (and ultimately accurate) discussion can take place.

Possibly a double language barrier since Rolf is from Switzerland, and seemingly not a native English speaking.

Anyway, just in case wink

Since my brief website article on DoD 5220.22-M was mentioned here by athulin

(Posted above Mon Mar 13, 2017 423 pm), I felt the need to reply here about wiping drives myself.

First, Prof. Gutmann never ever claimed you need to wipe any drive 35 times. He himself called that the "voodoo" interpretation of his paper! Read the full quote here and in multiple references online
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutmann_method#Criticism

Furthermore, the majority of Gutmann's paper was about very old drives, somewhat similar to floppy diskettes; the kind for which the end user could still carry out a true low-level format, actually re-writing the drive's tracks!
Second, as I've pointed out elsewhere, I believe that wiping a modern drive 1 single time is more than adequate to delete the data permanently, and that's what I wanted to clear up here Unless you have military or GOV security data on your drive, which by law requires it to be made physically impossible, even 100 years from now, to have ANY data recovered, there is ample eveidence that only a sngle overwrite is good enough, provided you have VERIFIED that every sector has been overwritten! If you don't verify, you don't know; no matter how many times you think some S/W has overwritten your drive!

Why should you care? Because there's also evidence that continuously writing to a drive, over and over; such as carrying out 7 passes (if you can even get to that many times through, forget 35), causes 'heat damage' to most drives! So, UNLESS, your point is to overwrite a drive until it can no longer be used… but using a Degausser takes far less time, after say, doing a 1 pass overwrite to be sure… I normally recommend only 1 pass and then going back and verifying that pass.
