Thanks for all the responses.
Specifically this is the "Dell secure manager" drive lock. I am wondering if using similar computer model would work to get to the password splash screen, or if this is specifically tied to the original hardware.

OK, but that is the "Commercial" name of the thingy.
AFAIK there are two main ways used on laptops to lock drives.
One is a "connection" from BIOS to the "normal" disk ATA password features.
The second is a "special chip" on the actual motherboard.
Finding out if it is the first or the second (or a third approach) may help in looking for correspondent solutions (if any available).
