Is the photo one of a series. If so, is the photo in question showing the correct name and time compared with other ones.
For instance if the photo before was img_0001 and after was img_0003, is the date of img_0002 correct. If these dates are not consistent, there may be a problem.
Also, does the date of the metadata match the date of the file.
All these dates can be changed by a skilled operator so a series of photos that matches does not confirm anything. Dates that do not match indicate that more investigation could be worth while.

Although I'm still looking for programs that will automate this process, I'll now have a better understanding of how those programs work by doing it manually.
