Is the photo one of a series. If so, is the photo in question showing the correct name and time compared with other ones.

For instance if the photo before was img_0001 and after was img_0003, is the date of img_0002 correct. If these dates are not consistent, there may be a problem.

Also, does the date of the metadata match the date of the file.

All these dates can be changed by a skilled operator so a series of photos that matches does not confirm anything. Dates that do not match indicate that more investigation could be worth while.

I want to thank all that have replied. Your comments and suggestions have been most helpful. I'm knee deep in reading material.

Although I'm still looking for programs that will automate this process, I'll now have a better understanding of how those programs work by doing it manually.

Once again, thanks to everyone!

A google search for "detect forged images" finds several articles from Universities and researchers

http//home.wmin.ac.uk/docs/HSCS/andrew2007.ppt

http//library.utia.cas.cz/separaty/2008/ZOI/saic-blinds%20methods%20for%20detecting%20image%20fakery.pdf

it seems like theories are very popular whilst on-the-field applications seem to be not ?

The only articles that talk about actually existing non-research-only softtware are those by the said Professor Farid
http//www.cs.dartmouth.edu/farid/tutorials/
that makes available the "Q" Matlab interface…..
…but Matlab doesn't appear as an "everyday" kind of inexpensive tool

Cyberspeak guys mentioned something about digital fingerprints left by various digital cameras. Apparently the image can be linked to a particular camera/brand/model (not EXIF). Sounds like a bit of science fiction but here is the link to the article.

Yep, the Author, Nasir Memon
http//isis.poly.edu/memon/

is by the way behind this Commercial thingy here
http//digital-assembly.com/

besides, this is the project on ISIS
http//isis.poly.edu/projects/forensics

Which again links to some of the articles I mentioned before, still a lot of theory, but nothing actually usable….?

This is the best near thing I could find
jpegsnoop

Not the "real" thing, but maybe worth a try.
