Could anybody shed some light for me.
I have an harrassment case -male telephones female many times, in her phone is his number in call history eg234, his phone is looked at but on reading the sim the msisdn reads a different number eg345, a phone call is made using the number in the call history 234 and the offenders handset rings??the sim has been read on two seperate systems and is correctly reported back345, when 345 is called nothing happens "unable to connect your call etc….)
at first one could claim that she is making the calls up 'cos this in call history isnt his,but when we ring this number the handset rings????
am aware of a possible forwarding use but wondered of any other ideas

The msisdn on a SIM card can be changed by a user of the telephone. It is not verified as being the telephone number of the SIM card and indeed the SIM card can function without any entry or the value being entered correctly.

This means that in order to determine the telephone number attributed to a SIM card then you either have to call it (which may have forensic implications to the data stored) or contact the network provider giving them the serial number and IMSI of the SIM card and they will be able to provide you with the telephone number assigned to it.

From what you've said then this would imply the telephone number of the SIM card is indeed 234 and that the own number entry is incorrect. Another possiblity is that the SIM card is supporting two lines but my guess is that it is likely to be the former.

cheers samr,
the two lines theory is something I thought about as well, however, the editing of ones msisdn,I thought that this was only available on certain handsets,i myself have an 8800 arte and cannot change this
( ok, i havnt looked too deeply into my own phone), this question was posed to me last night by a colleague hence my post, i will ask make and model

I'd also consider that they could have used the SIM in another handset so even if their current handset wouldn't allow them to change it (easily) then they could have used another. I'd recommend to be certain that you get the information from the network provider (where possible).

Adding to Sam's comments, bigjon, you can also take the SIM out of the handset and use a free-by SIM editor to alter the MSISDN.

Just a minor side note - I can make a call from, for example an asterisk box, to your phone, and your call log will display any number I choose, if the trunking is set up appropriately with my telco.

Can you make that call to a UK cell phone though?
