I would consider 3TB drives, rather than 2TB. (4TB are probably too expensive at the moment).

Your drives will not last 5 years. In 5 years time, the entry level PC might have 4-6TB of storage (this is my personal wild guess and I am sure others will have their own idea of this number).

I would also consider a earlier backup to tape - that can be stored offsite.

correction. i did use 3TB drives, not 2TB. i used the Western Digital Red Drives.

Thanks Eric. That's great info. I don't think I can afford an RS3413+ as it's nearly triple the cost of the RS2212+ for the same basic capacity, but I can always wish for a 3413.

I hadn't considered their 2 disk protection mode since I don't fully understand how it works. RAID 6, I understand. Do you have any insight on how the protection works? I can't find any technical details from them, but some marketing B.S.

Did you need to upgrade the RAM in the 3413? With the 2212, the RAM upgrade is pretty much required, but since the 3413 comes with 8GB to start, have you had any issues with it?

i bumped up the RAM in both.

ive not had any issues to date with either device using SHR2 (so they can withstand up to 2 disks failing at once)
