I'm just a student, but my first thoughts are web based + forensics = No. I'd rather do things locally, on machines I can validate and control. Maybe I'm wrong though…I'll be interested in what the pros have to say.

I might be wrong but "online" could designate a local network.

I guess most forensic workstations are part of a LAN and setting up a sql/php management system can be a good idea as you can have a centralized system while allowing each examiner to access and update it from their workstation…

Technical answer …

Have a look at Autopsy. It is web based, you can run it across a network if you so desire … And the source code is available for you to examine as well.

Methodological Answer …

So long as you aren't considering doing work which would involve the transmission of prohibited material from your server to your workstation (in which case, don't) I can't see why, with sufficient, and by sufficent - I mean a lot of - security in place that this wouldn't be possible.

You are going to need end-to-end encryption to your application - some form of VPN, a locked down client and server configuration and a lot of testing.

To be fair, you are just suggesting a case management system, not actually anything that handles evidence, so, whilst I would still construct it to be as secure as possible, your potential exposure is less.
