Does anyone has experience in carry out Financial Fraud investigation based on computer forensic?
As more financial information are stored on computer, I think the needs on doing financial investigation on computer is increasing. Can anyone share your experience with me?
I know the normal forensic techniques, such chair of evidence, disk imaging and documentation shall be applied to Financial Fraud investigation. However, I think the investigation shall based on our knowledge in white collar crime so that we know what is going to find.
I think we need to find (a) database forensics - to find trace or removed information on the accounting system (b) financial applications, such as Excel, that are frequently used in preparing financial reports. © deleted image, MS Word for the case of forged contracts and approvals….
Are there any thing that comes to your mind what important parts that I missed?
We focus our practice on financial/white collar fraud and abuse, that is why we are split between computer practitioners and CPA/CFEs. As one of the "computer guys" I have learned more than I ever thought I would about balance sheets and the myriad of accounting programs on the market.
I can assure you that we have more accounting programs and versions of accounting programs by a factor than any other software in our office.
Remember Excel is just a starting point for examination of financial data.

I did a Financial Fraud Investigation last year. It involved a Phishing attack on the victims computer. There are several types of Financial Fraud and how you go about it. Can you give me a little bit more info?
