Interesting. Too bad you're not able to provide more than just the name…it's something that I, and perhaps others, might like to try.

How's that?

That helps. My first step, were I performing this exam, would be to contact the author. If the response is not timely enough, my next step would be to download the tool, run it against a VM, and look for similar artifacts in "Lost Files".

Thanks. I wasn't going to contact the author, but was looking next to try the app. I am not sure that CleanUp! is the app.

Was hoping someone had run across the same artifacts that I am seeing. For example, I've done extensive testing of Eraser and Window Washer so if someone ran across the artifacts I've run across with those apps I would be able to match up the app with them.

Thanks for the help.

Cool. Have you considered posting the artifact lists someplace so that someone could find them? Folks may not think to ask you specifically about this kind of thing, and might find them via a Google search instead.

I was thinking of writing a book on them instead. lol

I'll see about consolidating my notes and maybe starting a blog. Been thinking about doing that lately. If and when I have time.

"Counter-Forensic Privacy Tools A Forensic Evaluation"

Modern operating systems and the applications that run on them generate copious amounts of data about their users' activity. Users are increasingly aware of their privacy exposure from these records and from digital artifacts that linger after files are "deleted" on computers they use. Efforts to redress this privacy exposure have spawned a range of counter-forensic privacy tools - software designed to irretrievably eliminate records of computer system usage and other sensitive data.

In this paper, we use forensic tools and techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of six counter-forensic software packages. The results highlight some significant shortfalls in the implementation and approach of these tools, leading to privacy concerns about the exposure of sensitive data. The findings also raise questions about the level of privacy protection that is realistic to expect from these tools, and others that take a similar approach.

Greg,

> I was thinking of writing a book on them instead.

You should. Seriously. Let me know if you would like some assistance with a publisher.
