DMG is actually a fairly flexible set of file formats. The data itself could be raw, compressed, encrypted, segmented, etc. DMG files can also include metadata such a MD5 sum (UFBI) or a software license agreement.

It is true that Mac OS utilities will properly handle DD images as if they were DMG images, so you could say that the DD format is also a type of DMG format. There is also a fairly common DMG format that is simply a DD image with a small footer.

The other two Apple disk image formats, sparseimage and sparsebundle, are closely related to DMG but use different file extensions.

Thanks for the additional info on DMGs. Interesting stuff, I didn't know the DMG format was so versatile.

Here's why I think nesrin's quandary was such an easy fix (again, check my theory on this one if you don't agree). Nesrin said that he used MacQuisition to create DMG image segments. MacQuisition (oddly enough) is a GUI front end for dcfldd. So essentially, MacQuisition created dd image segments adding the DMG naming convention (for mounting in a Mac environment). His image set is simply renamed dd image segments.

Actually MacQuisition uses aimage from AFF with tweaks done by us. But on the whole you are correct. With MacQuisition you can simply rename the dmg extension to .001, .002, .003, etc.
