I recently built (re-built) a machine running a core i7 920 CPU with Win 7 64-bit Pro. i tried installing FTK 1.62 on it but ran into problems that I assume are from the 64-bit architecture. I then decided to install it on Virtual PC in XP mode. The software installed fine, and the dongle drivers install fine, but when I go to 'activate' the dongle via the USB tab at the top it starts to install the drivers but never finishes. I've left it run for about an hour and walked away (a few times). By the time I come back it's in hibernate mode and I have to start over.
Anyone else have problems running an older version of FTK in XP mode? I plan to call AD Monday if I don't figure it out beforehand.
Thanks,
Danny
Did you try AD's forums?
Also, you may want to specify if you are referring to the old green dongles, or the codemeter dongle.
It's the old green dongle. When the driver files start transferring the window shows the pages going across as usual (it never freezes or stops) but it never finishes.
I'd be leery of using dongle drivers in a VM for forensics software. There are loads of known problems which could come back to bite you from a forensic perspective.
Besides, using FTK 1.6 in an XP VM on an i7 core seems a bit like overkill to me. Why not just get an inexpensive dedicated laptop/desktop which has native support for all the various drivers that you'll need and make it a dedicated machine?
The simple fact is that software such as FTK 1.6 was not designed with virtualization in mind. And why you may experience some success, I suspect that you could be challenged on the integrity of your methods, especially if Access Data says that the configuration is not supported.
FTK 1.6 clearly was not designed for Windows 7 and running a VM is not going to buy you that much, if anything, in terms of performance. A native, supported platform would be inexpensive and less likely to be challenged.
I have thought about doing that. I have a few older XP machines that I thought about using the FTK on and using the rest of the software on the new machine. I was just trying to avoid having 2 machines to go back and forth with. Hopefully I can upgrade the FTK in the near future but for now I was going to use the 1.6 on the new machine. It was working fine on the old one.
You could try using networked USB hub such as a Belkin or Digi. I have had some success with USB dongles and VMs using this set up.
Are you running FTK and the dongle drivers as Administrator and both with XP compatability mode (right click the exe, Properties, Compatability) on Windows 7?
Am running FTK 1.81.5 on Windows 7 64-bit without issue having done the above.
Jonathan,
Old topic I know ( very old ! ) but I've just come up with the same issue - can you recall where which the dongle driver is ? I've installed as Admin/Compatibility mode, but I assume that it still needs the individual drivers, as it still isn't working …
Cheers,
Azrael
Ok, not as old as I thought … I was reading your "joined" date not the thread date … Doh ! TGIF !
All of the little green dongles use the same drivers, regardless of which software they power.
If you're struggling to find the drivers, you can download the latest from
