That is happening to me
I have a HP laptop and my drive is blocked from a password that I don't know
I am not an expert I am trying to get informations
They asked me 400$ to fix the problem so I try to resolve it by myself…
(with that money I will buy a new one)

I think I had the best solution, though nobody else seemed to want to comment on it.

Use the onboard delete function that was described earlier and then simply recover the whole thing as slack space.

The problem with recovering data from unallocated space is that you cannot guarantee that all data will be recovered and quite a few of the files recovered would almost certainly be damaged.

But if its the only option its worth a try.

I should have also pointed out that using the erase function is not forensically sound as the data on the original drive is being changed from its original state by erasing the disk.

That's true, you are modifying the evidence. But if it's the only option… ?

Recovering data from "Maximum Security" locked hard drive is possible, but the process is different for different brands and drives. There is no "universal" way or utility. 2.5" IBMs/Hitachi's are especially complicated.

Leonora,

If this is a case you are working for then perhaps paying to get access to the data - can be absorbed by the customer? Else if this is personal or a laptop you acquired then I guess trying to do it yourself is the best option as suggested by others….in which case erasing the data & the using data recovery tools to recover it should not be an issue - as it's not evidence …or is it?

Just a thought.
