Has anyone used the distance learning program for CEH, with EC council? If so, comments good/bad will be appreciated.
I saw no one replied to this thread so I thought I would mention my experience for the CEH course I attended. I didn't attend the CEH course through distance learning but I did attend the CEH version 5 at a company called New Horizons. The last I knew the course was at version 6 so my comments may not apply.
I personally didn't have a good experience with the course. The instructor of the course I attended appeared like they didn't have experience in the field so the instructor didn't provide any valuable information which wasn't in the study materials. The other issue I had was with the course materials since it appeared to be disorganized. A lot of the material seemed to be just about various tools (some were really outdated) without covering the process or methodology to use. At times it felt like you were just running this tool then some other tool without providing the context of the purpose of running the tool. I learned more working through the CEH study guide book and a few other books to obtain the certification then I did attending the course.
Again, my experience was with the CEH version 5 and New Horizons so this may not apply to your situation.

I am currently taking the CEH DVD and online course and will let you all know how it goes. So far I'm not getting the warm and fuzzy about it, but I'm only 1/3 in.
Indeed, keep me updated corey_h.
Have they simply sent you a load of material in the post, and basically said good luck or have they provided some form of study method, topic 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, along with DVD movies of the lessons?
Regards,

I would echo the comments of Corey. I also attended a course (UK) rather than distance learning. Wasn't overly impressed with the course content. On the first day we were given a huge box with some heavy duty manuals that were the course content. The lead instructor then told us not to worry as we'd never get through the course content in the time we had therefore he'djust cover the parts that we'd need to pass the certification at the end of the week.
As Corey mentioned many (in fact almost all) of the tools or exploits that were discussed on the course had already been patched or were no longer valid.

The more feedback I see, the more I think the price is not worth the course.
How are people getting on, who are currently on this course?
If anyone has a similar qualification which they have attended, please inform me.
Regards,
I attended the course rather than the distance learning as well, and would echo the comments about the course material. The big box of ec-council books seem a waste of time to me. I felt that some of the course material could have been presented better, and it didn't help that it was written by someone whose native tongue clearly isn't English.
A significant number of the software tools seemed to be quite old and redundant now. The instructor was good, but I got the impression that he felt that some of the questions in the exam were too ambiguous and this meant that he wasn't always sure of what they would be looking for as an answer.
All the others on the course were I.T. security professionals and I noticed that they all seemed to find the content quite easy. Some of them recommended the OSCP course by Backtrack as a next step.
As a slightly oblique question; has anyone done a course at Koenig in India? If so what did you think of them?

Actually, thinking about it, I suppose it could have been written by a UK university graduate….
(sorry, just trying to be topical)
If anyone has a similar qualification which they have attended, please inform me.
My issue was with the CEH course but I had a good experience working towards the certification. By experience I mean it was worth my time to study in order to learn the material while the cert was my secondary goal. If you are interested I would be willing to share the books I used to do the self-study route.
