Should educational establishments be encouraged or discouraged to enter the commercial world by competing with other companies for computer forensic work?
If staff, at these establishments, are doing this work is it fair to the students who pay a lot of money to attend courses?
Do college lecturers have the time to do commercial work and still devote their time to their academic duties?

Let me phrase your question another way do you want to be taught by people who have no real world experience in what they are teaching you?

I don't think a Uni should be running a consultancy, but I don't see any issue with a lecturer running a private consultancy to keep his/her skills and understanding of the field current.

There is also a huge difference between a tenured, full time professor and someone who teaches a single class per grading period.

The best teachers I have had, as Tony describes, were those in night class. They were often late, and often weaved their work-day issues into our lessons.
