Hello everyone,

I encountered a situation yesterday with a Blackberry and I wanted your input on this and maybe answer a couple of questions.

2 weeks ago, a backup of a BB was done using BB Desktop Manager. Yesterday, I started analyzing the resulting IPD file using Amber Blackberry Converter. For validation, I sampled some emails in the IPD files and tried to find them in the BB. Surpisingly, there were some emails that could not be found. So, I performed another backup with BB Desktop Manager and compared it with the first IPD file.

What surprised me was that the number of email messages had changed (175 instead of 188). After digging deeper, I found out that there was a "Keep messages for 30 days" configuration on the device. And indeed, all the messages that had "disappeared" were more than 30 days old.

BTW, the device was always in a Faraday room when powered on.

So, when configured this way, I guess the BB automatically deletes older messages.

My questions are the following

- When is the BB checking for older messages (at startup ? / when the email app is launched ?)

- Are the "disappered" messages deleted, wiped or just not displayed?

- If I roll back the date on the BB, will the messages reappear?

I'm asking you guys, because I don't have any BB devices I can test on at the moment.

Thanks.

According to a knowledge base article (KB11829) at the official BlackBerry web site

"When viewing the Deleted Items folder on the BlackBerry® smartphone, a No Messages indicator is displayed. This is by design. The smartphone does not reconcile the Deleted Items folder because of space considerations."

However, if the email account is synchronized with BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) the BlackBerry device is able to perform a remote search of emails.

Since you have the backup file you can restore the deleted emails to the device. The answers to the particular questions raised in your posting can be inferred.
