Hey,
Talking about getting insane o with securing your data (personal or corporal)…..
Does anyone have any idea about existing countermeasures against an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse), regardless of the range of the EMP?
Both theoretical or applied ideas are welcomed.
p.s. anyone thought of this security measure, in corporal level, or is it still a 'fairy tale'?
Thanks,
alien.

"Corporal" level? What's that?
It's been a while since I was involved in that sort of area, but would some kind of shielding be effective?
Actually, now that I think about it, what does EMP have to do with forensics?
Maybe that would make a good spy novel. A computer would be booby-trapped with a vacuum cleaner motor to generate a strong enough EM field to scramble the hard-drive.
Actually, I worked in an office that recieved a new batch of computers - organizational upgrade. Almost immediately we started experiencing hard drive failures. Almost 25% of the computers crashed within two weeks. We were perplexed – some offices were find but others had higher degree of failures. Long story short answer. The newer computers had composite cases (mostly plastic). This one particular cleaning crew used a upright vacuum cleaner – industry grade. Any time that moster came within 1 foot of a unit sitting on the floor for more that 20 seconds the system crashed. Believe it or not! It took almost a two months to figure that out. All the computers sitting on the desktops were fine!

I use this term as a reference to the actual building of a company.
The idea is how an EMP could influence - destroy the systems of a company (working with evidence), maybe as an act of terrorist attack.
Still reading about the properties of an EMP, so not completely sure if such a scenario could be realistic.
About 35 years ago I remember a similar problem with a Honeywell mainframe and a cleaner with an industrial floor polisher, it used to put massive spikes on the mains and bring the machine down regularly. That took quite a long time to work out as well.
There you have it Key. Layer one of the OSI model.
Just because someone hasn't physically touched the computer, doesn't mean they didn't "do something" to it.
I can see where a scenario might exist where someone could cause serious interruptions into a business by crashing drives via an industrial cleaning device. As two of the previous posters can testify, something like this can take a while to figure out.
I'm still a bit confused about the use of the word "corporal" in your post alien. Did you happen to mean "corporate?"

Hey,
I guess the term 'corporate' would make more sense. In my home country we may use 'corporal' in reference with an organisation, to mean 'the entity/the body' of the organisation itself.
Sorry for the confusion ? .
