I just installed Encase 6.8 on a Dell XPS M1210 which is running on VISTA HOME
In the aquisition process , i was unable to add any device to Encase.
I got this error" None of the selected devices are available"
Any clue???

Have you checked out the EnCase User's Forum? With your dongle number, you can sign up for access…and I do believe that the issue of compatibility has been addressed time and time again.
On our team, the "standard" for tools is XP SP2, due to the stability. Most forensics examiners that I know prefer to work with the platforms that they know, and don't see the point of adding complexity and issues to the mix, which are inherent with going with the "latest and greatest".
Good luck.
I don't believe that Encase 6 supports installation on a Vista OS, at least 6.8 did not. That being the case, the admissibility of any acquisition or case processing done on a Encase 6.8/Vista system could be challenged in court if this is an issue for you.
XP Pro SP2 and Windows 2003 are better (safe) options and both are available in 64-bit versions (though most of the modules for Encase 6 do not work in the 64-bit implementation).
If, as I suspect, you are running on a retail system designed for home users, you may be out of luck finding vendor support for XP Pro or 2003. There are a number of sites that you can Google which describe how to "downgrade" to XP from Vista when the OS is not vendor supported.

That is beacuse of UAC.
You have to run as an administrator and run it with admin priviledges.
the easiest way is to disabe User Account Control and in the shortcut to encase, set "run as administrator"
that works,
I am as Administrator
Greetings,
Ok, forgive me for being rude, but is this a legal copy of EnCase? Do you have a dongle for it? I'm curious why you're not following the suggestion above to ask this on the EnCase forums.
If you do so, and find an answer, perhaps you could post it here to close the thread out?

Right click EnCase.exe, click on the compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP".
