What do you mean by "run properly?" Currently, there is no release of EnCase which officially supports Windows 7, so you are risking it by using EnCase under Windows 7. That having been said, I have gotten EnCase to install and work under Windows 7, but would not use the combo in production.

Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate should be released with XPM (XP Mode) which includes a licensed virtual XP mode. You will also need the correct cpu that supports XPM virtualization (not all cpus do.) Your tools should run fine under XPM mode but we will have to test that on the release.

I don't think running EnCE inside a Virtual Machine is a "good" solution. I'm told EnCase will run on windows 7. If EnCase needs to use the XPM mode, you're better just using an XP machine rather than run through a VM.

- just my $20 (adjusted for inflation)

Greetings,

We regularly and frequently run EnCase inside of VMs. This greatly speeds up our case setup time and allows us to run more cases with less physical hardware. With properly configured and maintained VMs I can set up a new case on a pristine machine in about ten minutes. When a case goes idle - waiting for feedback from the client, doing research elsewhere - I can suspend the VM and use the hardware for running a different case in a different VM. There are more advantages, but those are the major ones.

I hadn't thought of that scenario before. Thanks for the feedback. Although it's not a solution I would use, it's good to be aware of it.

EnCase's threading added to a hypervisor?? goodness, I couldn't think of a worse setup (or a better migraine recipe)!

actually, I think that's a very well thought out solution, especially if you are using an esx(i) type backend. Should I ask about Licensing Kovar?

so whats the official position now? Does 7 remain unsupported, does anyone using it in production?

To my mind it offers some real benefits to the examiner, and AccessData will support it.
do we currently have any formal user groups in the UK to feed structured community requirements for Encase? would there be an appetite among the community if there isn't one?

I have a new quad core 64bit Win7 64 system on the way that I look to try to burn in with EnCase 6.14 in the next two weeks. Will let you know how it works.
