Just been quoted 1836 quid for EnCase ( years support included) and 1995 for FTK ( years support included. Both ex VAT.

Is this as big a no brainer as I think it is? Or am I missing something?

EnCase is the better product right?

Depends on what you want to do/use it for…

WOW, just checked my records and on the 29th May last year, I purchased two copies of FTK 1 for £1190 plus VAT.

Considering all the issues with FTK 2, that is some price hike if you just plan to use FTK 1!

Every tool has it strengths and weaknesses. The fact you have both means you can confirm the results produced that by each.

Having both tools, and others such as SMART and Xways, is an advantage.

Thanks for all your replies Gents. I am only at the start of this long road of Forensics, as is the company I am working for, and currently the budget is low so trying to push for two or three bits of software might be a step too far D . I have been reading up on this subject for about a year or so but without any real opportunity to put any of it into practise, and work threw something to me a few months ago to investigate at a low level, just to see if it was worth paying for a proper investigation and I turned up enough using free tools for them to go further and ultimately find serious data theft. Currently the jobs I get are when staff leave without notice to a competitor and I have to see if they might have taken any data with them that is sensitive or confidential, and also to see if there has been a conspiracy to take other members of staff with them. Nothing earth shattering you will agree, but I find it all very exciting.

If the budget is low then X-Ways makes even more sense
X-Ways Forensics (incl. Replica 2.36) 1 license EUR 675.90

Add Evidor (includes Davory, Trace, Replica) for EUR 349.00 and you are still half the cost of EnCase or FTK. Add some X-Ways training (EUR 1,250) and some of the tools members of this forum have created and you would have a very powerful arsenal for a bargain.

The one cost you are omitting from your EnCase (₤1,527.45 per student for Level 1) and FTK (EUR 1594 for BootCamp) budget is training. In my opinion a necessary element of the budget.

looked at some of those but wanted to get used to working with one of the market leaders, so to speak. My feeling was that if I move from here and want to progress within CF then showing an ability with either of those would be more preferential to future employers. Plus training comes out of a seperate budget and is virtually limitless when it comes to job improvement so it was a good opportunity to get this under my belt.
