Did any of you watch Spooks tonight (BBC1,9pm)? The Muslim character said that his fanatic friends were logged under "Football".

The Spook took out the SIM Card from the phone and copied it using a SIM reader memory device.

Questions
1) Would it be obvious that names/numbers and groups are only recorded on SIM Card?
2) What about the mobile phone used by the character playing the Muslim; would the mobile phone store relevant names/numbers under groups?
3) Does that mean that nothing is recorded under "groups" in the handset phonebook?

The programme is a challenging puzzle for mobile telephone examiners. What if the character was a European? Would that really make any difference?

How good are you as a mobile telephone examiner really?

It beggers belief some of the things that the "Spooks" do

imaging hard drives in 30 secs flat - sometimes remotely
tracking someones cell signal just like that
and like you say dumping all of the sim info on a phone whose model wasn't determined so must have been a stroke of luck to have all the contacts stored on the sim and under a group

artistic license and a very vivid imagination from the writers me thinks!

Makes our industry and expertise look like a bunch of key punching, level pulling monkeys. Well trained, but still monkeys.

I like how on CSI every person can perform every job. I've seen Nick do everything from examine fingerprints to hard drives. If Archie (the computer examiner) isn't available then whoever is there just jumps right in, then he pushes a button and 30 seconds later has all of his answers.

Using my Kodak, I can take an image of a HDD in a couple of seconds at most 😉

I guess you have to keep in sight that it is for entertainment. Viewers would soon turn over if they were subjected to all the details.

The vast majority of people are oblivious to the time scales involved/complexities involved/on the spot decisions which need to be made. The simplest insight more than satisfies them in terms of how entertaining the program is, too little and its boring and not entertaining, too much and it's boring…

I wonder how many doctors make the same comments about shows such as Casualty…

Why not ? Every one I know have their contacts in the SIM not the phone's memory. Copying it would be really quick with the key-chains available.

Yeah, the group thing would depend on the phone ofc.

The best parts are when Abby (NCIS, American show) clicks-and-couple-of-strokes and hacks into secure servers, images hard drives, whatever.

Actually I just read the other day that CBS has green lit a CSI Computer Forensics show. So prepare for more groaning.
