I am currently working on a case with a detective to regarding a store robbery. The owner was able to extract the video from the date and time of the incident for the detective's copy of the evidence.
The detective loaded the dvr viewing software on his laptop;however, when he tries to open the .dvr file that is the format from the DVR device, it asks for a password. We have tried all possible passwords given to us by the store owner;however, none of them work. When DVRs are first setup, I am sure it asks the user to set a password, I am thinking this is the password the program is looking for;however, the owner does not seem to be sure.
Is there any tool out there that can possibly brute force the password? The password might be very simple, but the owner just cant remember it.
can you go back to the original DVR, and re-extract it into a standard video format?
What is the brand and model of the DVR?
Also, the password might have been put in by the company who installed the DVR. That way, when video sequences need to be extracted and viewed, you have to call the company and they'll (most likely) charge you for the password.
Is it a standalone DVR box or a system set up on a PC?
I've come across a PC system on which I had a similar issue where we couldn't play the videos. I resolved it by taking a DD image of the DVR PC and booting the image in a VM, then using the DVR software to review the files.
this is a stand alone system. I am not sure on the make of the DVR because I was not onsite only the detective was. The detective didnt notice a make on the device;however, we will be in contact with the store owner to verify where he bought the DVR.
I've done several different systems before, all were linux and all had default password.
Usually however many digits in password were x-* so if 5 digits
1234* or *1234 3 incorrects was usually a 30 minute lockout.
One other question is are you using the proprietary software the DVR company has. Most all have their own little program to quad and upplex the files for PC viewing allowing for a certain number of cameras to be viewed.
Hope something there helps.
