From the Editors
The first article in the fifteenth IJDE issue presents innovative concepts to deal
with a new technology challenge. The other two articles are thought provoking
pieces that will stimulate further discussion, encourage additional research, and
help advance digital forensics methods.
The Baggili, Mislan, and Rogers article, Mobile Phone Forensics Tool Testing A
Database Driven Approach, the authors note that mobile phone forensics is a
new area that does not lend itself to the traditional computer forensics model.
The paper proposes “a database driven approach for the documentation of the
mobile phone forensics procedures.” This approach facilitates the testing of
mobile phone acquisition tools and provides a basis for determining error rates.
The Bem and Huebner article, Computer Forensic Analysis in a Virtual
Environment, discusses the “potential role of virtual environments in the analysis
phase of computer forensics investigations.” The authors discuss a two model
approach using both conventional and virtual environments to determine the
efficacy of using virtual environments. They argue that such an approach
shortens the analysis phase and makes better use of staff who do not possess
sophisticated training.
In the Gladyshev and Enbacka article, Rigorous Development of Automated
Inconsistency Checks for Digital Evidence Using the B Method, the authors
explore the application of formal methods to the analysis of digital evidence. The
article focuses on one aspect of analysis, inconsistency checks and verifying
their correctness. The authors present a rigorous model and discuss the positive
and negative aspects of it.
We are actively soliciting articles for the Winter 2008 issue. Articles must be
submitted by January 30, 2008 to provide time for the peer review process.
