I was wondering whether it was worth creating a FF resource when appps, utilities are discovered to log information about them. Just a suggestion and appreciate this could get quite a large thread.

Did a search at FF and didn't find a thread about this utility 'ccleaner'. Thought it worth posting.

Here are the file signatures

I have a download link for the utility if anyone can't find a copy. This is not my utility.

If I judge things correctly I think the feeling is that some (most?) would prefer to see such info added to existing wikis rather than create a new repository here. Personally I'm happy to respond to our members' needs if there's sufficient demand for something, though. As always, thoughts and comments welcome.

Jamie,

What capabilities do you have on FF with regard to structured data ? A file repository is a relatively useless thing in itself, as searching becomes problematic, and a "wiki" site is, by design, an unstructured free form entity. I'm sure that the DragonflyCMS has a dozen plugins for assorted things, but I have no idea if any of them would suit …

Generally my feeling is that I would rather not see another site created for things … Disparate resources are harder to determine the value of, and people will be spread more thinly across them. Arguably there is a case for survival of the fittest though …

Personally, I would rather like to see FF expand - it is easy to use, well designed and frequented by some pretty good people …

Oh, and the admin answers his e-mail -P

Expand - go for forensic world domination -D

I think the knowledge base module would be the closest fit but I'm not sure if it's still being maintained and even if it is it wouldn't offer the functionality of some of the other wiki packages out there. Realistically the best option would be to use a separate package rather than adding to the current CMS. That would mean we couldn't (easily) use the same authentication system for access but the model I'd prefer would probably be to open it up for additions/edits from everyone with final approval by a moderator being necessary anyway.

I know Paul's wiki has a different access model but I'm not sure how the above would differ from Simson Garfinkel's forensicswiki.com (I suspect not at all). With that in mind it's probably not worth reinventing the wheel unless there's a clear opportunity to a) do it better or b) do something different but still worthwhile.

There are, of course, different file signature forums, like Tim Coakley's Filesig Forum etc. There is Wiki and Forensicwiki etc and different blogs and websites to obtain information. Weighing that in the balance against the suggestion (I raised above) of a resource-greedy repository, plus the headache of the complications that can occur (running a forum should be as enjoyable as possible, not a chore), maybe this is just one of those suggestions that belongs on the backburner.
