Hi All,

Little bit of help would be much appreciated in this case. We have a Sun Microsystems Server utilizing SunOS 5.8 utilizing a software based raid. That isnt the problem right now, the problem we are having, is we need to "forensically" image these drives, and do not have a fiber channel adapter. I have looked for an adapter that would allow from Fiber to SCSI, but not seeing anying. We have plenty of SCSI, ATA, and IDE type adapters, but no Fiber Channel. Wondering if anyone knew of a good way of imaging, or a way to hook an adapter to image these drives…

Any help is really appreciated…

You might want to take a look at WiebeTech's RedPort product http//www.wiebetech.com/products/RedPort.php

Never tried it myself, so I can't really vouch for it.

I am no IR guru (far from it) and very much a novice in this kind of stuff, but is it worth considering some kind of F-Respose-like solution?

F-Response claims to be Solaris (i.e. v5+ of SunOS) compatible. It is my tool of choice whenever I am faced with acquiring complex server set-ups.

F-Response works on the iSCSI protocol so if you are au fait with this, you might be able to initiate your own iSCSI server from the SunOS machine - if you want to do this forensically however you'll need to understand and explain the process you have undertaken and show that you are competent to do so (at least that is the position in UK law).

I have had to do this before, I managed to aquire a used IBM fibre channel 19" rack chassis and an appropriate FC HBA (LSI I think…) all for about £300 if I remember right.

The supplier I aquired this kit from was http//www.used-unix.com, they are UK based, not sure if this hinders your search.. They don't list everything on the site, but are only a phonecall away and were very helpful with me.

Once attached, I was able to image the drives individually.
