First post ads - annoying? Spam? Relevance?

I think that the issue might be that the forum has now been restricted to about 800 pixels (at least it seems to be on my machine and wasn't before). When the forum went the full width of the screen the ads were off to the right and sort of out of view.

That's true, although it's a change which was made some months ago to counter the rather ugly formatting which was evident on widescreens. I think the issue here is more the particular ad in question which I blacklisted yesterday.
