hi all,

I am a student at the University of East London, following MSC Information Security and Computer Forensics(2008/2009).I started my msc this September and probably would be passing out in next September. My undergraduate degree was BSC in IT and I have less than an year of work experience(as a programmer). By the time I pass out and apply for jobs i would be having a big problem when it comes to experience and loss of touch in programming. so I thought it would be great if i join into a famous open source forensic/IT security tool development. Could some one please recommend me an open source forensic/IT security project that I could join in and gain some valuable experience. I think doing this would help me when I apply for jobs in 09 September.

Here is a list of open source tools that I found very popular in the security/forensic field
1>Nessus
2>Snort
3>ACID
4>ClamAV
5>MIMEDefang
6>Spamassasin
7>IPcop
8>Smoothwall
9>SELinux
10>AppArmor
11>OpenVPN
12>Nmap
13>OSSISM
14>OSSTMM

last 3 were selected for google summer of code 2008…

your suggestions and ideas are most welcome…..

Thanks & Regards

kushi

PyFlag http//www.pyflag.net
Autopsy http//www.sleuthkit.org/autopsy/
Odessa http//odessa.sourceforge.net/
Foremost http//foremost.sourceforge.net/
Scalpel http//www.digitalforensicssolutions.com/Scalpel/
PTK http//ptk.dflabs.com/
libewf https://sourceforge.net/projects/libewf
libpff https://sourceforge.net/projects/libpff
revit https://sourceforge.net/projects/revit
Volatility https://www.volatilesystems.com/default/volatility/

Not an exhaustive list. For me Volatility is probably the most interesting.
