Sorry to drag this one up again….but have I just dealt with this exact same problem with a Dell laptop and a 40GB Fujitsu drive. Even though I had the password for the BIOS and drive access, I could not create an image of the drive with it outside the box. Trying a network acquisition with EnCase (network boot disk) did not work – it fell over three times during the acquisition process (after about 800MB had been transferred). I didn’t have time to think too much about that problem, I suspect it was a power save issue with the laptop, rather than any fundamental problem with EnCase. Time was pressing so I used the following process - I booted with Helix and attached a removable USB drive to the laptop. I used GRAB on Helix to make a DD copy of the drive to the USB drive (formatted previously FAT32). This worked and didn’t take too long either (no compression).

I next plugged the USB drive into my forensic machine, and attempted to import the raw image file into EnCase. This didn’t work first time, and I could not afford to again waste too much time trying trial and error. I used FTK imager to convert the dd files into EnCase E01 files (again this didn’t take too long). I wanted to use EnCase rather than FTK as the rest of the case (4 machines) were on my EnCase case file (and I find bookmaking very easy in EnCase). Once completed and I checked the MD5's matched - I was able to add the files into EnCase and started work……

It sounds long winded and convoluted. There was probably some simple setting I was getting wrong with the DOS acquisition attempt, but it has been that long since I have used EnCase in DOS, and now I am very comfortable in Linux/Helix – so I went with it and it worked for me. An example of using many tools to accomplish that ‘ball ache’ task.

Perhaps one day I'll be as good as you, but in the meantime I'll keep trying as best as I can with my meager ability.

Hopefully I may actually get something right eh? And perhaps (god forbid) help people , beacause as far as I am aware - that's what this forum is all about - helping each other. Not being a smart-a**e.

When you offer something sensible perhaps I'll revise my opinion, but up to now I've found your posts about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike

Oh, and some further points -

1. Delete your duplicate post
2. Get over your obsession with what other people are paid (its becoming tiresome)
and
3. I'm not gay.

Hey Andy,

I don't believe he is calling anyone "gay" his English is AWFUL he means you gays (guys) think guys with an accent from Serbia. He is rather intelligent about this topic but goes about it the wrong way and has wayyyyyyy too much attitude.

Yeah I know, I appologise - he probably is quite a brainy 'guy'. My final point was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps it was a little too subtle. I guess he has just rubbed me up the wrong way.
