I am a soon to be graduated undergraduate student who is looking into graduate schools and I am wondering what would be the best area for research in computer forensics. Since some of you have been practicing in this area for years I would like to get input from you all in what needs to be researched. Please be as specific or as broad as you can. Thanks all the input will help.

It's probably the easiest field to find new topics. I'm doing mine on Calibration of Forensic Equipment Prior to Use. Based on what I'm doing there, some of the possible topics for future research would be

Process/procedure errors in Computer Forensics analysis (Daubert related)
Network Forensics (if you want to write tools, etc)
Vista, Bitlocker (if your uber geek)
Analysis of Rootkitted systems (if you have the tools)

If you can work with a local examiner, you could probably come up with even more. If a RCFL is near, maybe working with them. They do have internships available if you're going to an NSA center of excellence. Let us know your interests, maybe we can brainstorm here.

Thanks for the start of the posts and ideas. My main interests in CF are reverse engineering (binary analysis) in a timely manner, data carving, and issues with encrypted files. I really want to know what would be useful in the field and not just in academia.

Hmmm. Let's toss out ideas here.

Encryption Bitlocker; handbook of common encryption/wiping products (from forensics view); Stego (lots being done already);

Data carving tools; handbook of techniques; memory carving tool

Reverse engineering that's a tough one. Not that it wouldn't make a great project, I think there are lots of needs for "things" that if well reverse engineered, would be helpful to the field. The timely manner is a problem since by it's nature, it isn't. )

Ideas from others?

Would not recommend bitlocker; Microsoft will has/will come out with detailed specs and tools for LE.
