What do you recommend for a forensic laptop. I have the sift workstation, vmware etc etc but should I purchase a Dell, Lenova, HP WIndows XP, 4GB ram, 160 HD along with external 1TB drive?

I also have all the drive adapters and such!

I like Sager's laptops NP9280 is a GREAT one.

12-16GB RAM you can run up to 1.5TB onboard hard drive space.

Video card to handle anything you can throw at it. Easily runs FTK 3.0

There are many federal agencies on both sides of the border going Macbook Pro.

You can easily set them up to multi-boot Windows OS X and Linux.

The last thing I heard at a conference last May from someone there in the know was that the FBI had just ordered about 3000 units.

If you're going to be using it for imaging, you absolutely want the ability to attach 2 e-sata drives, which means you need a model with an expresscard or some other expansion system. Check the specs, cause I'm seeing a lot of business laptops don't come with esata and/or expresscard.

Some Dell Studios come with eSata port and you can always add the second one by using express slot. They are not perfect but I have been using one for a year now with no major complaints so far. Lots of memory and SSD would make it even better if you can afford them.

Greetings,

MacBook Pro with 320GB disk, 4GB of RAM, VMWare Fusion, and a dual port eSATA card. I image with it, run EnCase, take notes, file photos …

Well this is very useful. Ive been researching macs all week because I've been planning the migration to an all mac lab. I think this is the last clue. After my training, off to the mac store!

Current MacBook Pro's do not have the express slot to add an eSATA card unless you get the monster 17" model. The 13" and 15" have the SD card slot. They do have the 1394b port.

Whatever you get, try to avoid using USB2 in acquisitions unless you like waiting a very long time for things to finish.
