I have been doing some research on the best tools to recover passwords from excel files. Can anyone recommend a free password recovery tool for excel files?
http//
Works for Excel version 2003 and lower. But I highly recommend Passware - it's well worth the $79 price.
Thanks for the suggestions fellows, has anyone ever used cloud computing to recover any password protected files on a case? I believe passware can be utilized with Amazon's EC2 service.

The Forensic or Enterprise Kit version of Passware is needed to use Amazon EC2. That's at least $750. I thought you were looking for "free?" )
I am looking for free, but I was wondering the security and legal boundaries one would encounter if they used a cloud service to crack password protected evidence.
OSForensics will also do it,
http//
Supports the old Office 2000/2003 version (40bit encryption) and the newer AES encryption method used in Office 2007/2010.
But in the free release of OSF, it will only run in 1 thread. So speed is limited.
From a legal point of view I can't see the difference where the cracking is done. The 'cloud' is just a buzz word for renting a remote computer. Might be more of an issue from a privacy and confidentially point of view. Once the document is sent off to the cloud, who really knows who has access to it? I mean it is kind of hard to claim the document will remain encrypted at all times when the aim is to decrypt the document.
