Hello,

What is your preferred method to export attached files in emails and files embedded in other files and maintain their relationship to parent items?

Recursive file export or file export?

Trying to export actual files and "actual files" in email messages and zips.

Thanks for any pointers!

When you select the message and choose export, in the popup box you can select Include E-Mail Attachments With E-Mail Messages.

If you want to maintain E-Mail message formats select Export Raw E-Mail Message Instead of Converting to HTML.

To export files to a single directory without maintaining the original directory structure, select the files and choose Export Files.

To export files and folders while maintaining the original directory structure, select the files and choose Recursive File Export.

Of course both suggestions depend on the circumstances. Are you just exporting files to give to the client for review? Are you exporting files to feed to PRTK or some other external program? Are you exporting for some kind of report?

I would recommend AccessData BootCamp if you are not familiar with these concepts.

I just wish I could export an email from FTK as an MSG file. I can not tell you how much I would enjoy that ability!

That capability exists now if the emails were exported out of a PST and loaded into FTK as msg files (I know.. defeats the purpose right?). One good piece of information is that the next 1.x release will fix the issue of removing the attachments when you export the emails.
