I've encountered issues loading 3rd party E01 images on two separate occasions in past engagements. It seems related to how the E01s are encoded on certain older machines such as a TD1. I'd try creating a copy in another format, such as dd/raw. Just load up the images in FTK Imager, and save to another image. If that works, then try creating another E01. As always with FTK, try to minimize the processing you're doing to minimize the time it takes to get your answer between steps.
Paladin boot disc (free) from download from Sumuri.com will also allow you to create an image (several formats to choose from) from an existing image.

I ended up getting it to work when we upgraded our Encase license to 7.09. It took a really long time, but it processed fine at that point.
I suggest you to give a try to the tools included in the latest libewf, that is capable of handling truncated or some corrupted E01 files.
Note that you may have to compile the tools yourself if you can't find the most recent package for your linux distribution, you can find the latest sources
