Running a web server is a losing proposition. Running a service is the niche.

I agree with you in one perspective, there are way to many solutions for hosting out their to start up a web hosting site… The only way to make something productive is to get something new and something people need.

What kind of services would you guys look for, that you would want someone to take off your hands?

all ideas are still welcome, just need to process some ideas

and yea, I am a college student;
we did have a certain amount of money to work with at the start.. but now we are primarily focusing on a project that requires dedication over money.. if that makes sense.

I actually run DNA on a rack of machines here in the office (around 20 machines). It is certainly faster than one machine running PRTK, but it could certainly be faster.

Based on the specs from Tableau I could get rid of half my machines or more with one accelerator. The cost savings in electricity (and cooling) could be a compelling factor. The stack of computers was free so hard to quantify.

While we are on the topic, does anyone here run their own cluster? I'd be interested to hear about it.

Not currently, and not for forensics, but I have in the past for CFD applications and medical research - I might be able to help if you have specific questions about any particular aspect …

GPUs are another untapped resource that could be used. Was the PS3 one of your motivators to post that thread about benchmarks?

So much to read now……. ?

Indeed it was - well spotted 😉 I've been looking at CUDA for GPU programming, especially now it has been ported to the Mac ( -D ) and the PS3 with the cell chip … With regard to the benchmarking, I wanted to see what the baseline statistics were before trying to multi-thread the apps, and to try and get some decent comparisons going.

Fortunately the lack of software patents in the EU means that I don't have to worry about any of those companies that have already been looking at GPU for password decryption for example …

After seeing how much the Tableau device costs, I've been reading about CUDA for the last hour or so. If you go head on into researching this topic - please keep us updated.

Sure thing -) Was thinking of doing my Masters thesis around it amongst other things - I've seen Golden Richard III around here - he is the guy to speak to about this sort of thing judging from his paper publications !

As far as the cluster goes, i kinda-sorta-might know of one that doesn't get used very often. I wanted to see if anyone was running a multi-threaded password cracking application on a cluster and how much of an improvement they saw. I haven't really looked into it, but do you recommend any particular program? hopefully multithreaded, free, and/or open source.

Non commercial, the best I can suggest it John the Ripper ported to run on MPI. Which is all of the above - multi-thread, free and open source ! (Google John-MPI for more info).
