Hi,

Im currently investigating the use of geo-tags in photographs taken on smart phones in order to produce a program that can extract these details.

Do any of you know of any useful resources that I could use? I have searched online for information regarding geo-tags, what they are etc but cannot seem to find a 100% reliable looking resource. Any form of journal or book would be of great benefit.

Thanks for your time

Geo-Tags are part of the Exif standard for embedding data within files.

You can find information on the Exif standard here

I already have an application that will view image files and display the geo-tags. You can download it from my website

Opanda works pretty well too. I've also used Google Earth and imported the pic and used it to locate where the photo was taken.

Try TagView… Reads EXIF including geotag and displays it on a map and can produce a report as well… Not bad for free!!

TAG Examiner is also excellent if you have a larger volume. Again, also produces a report.

Paul Sanderson also offers a free tool http//www.sandersonforensics.com/forum/content.php?123-Forensic-Image-Viewer to do this which "links to Multimap.com to display location information for those files with GPS EXIF data"

Irfanview with the exif plugin is good too - it gives you options to create a KML file or load the data into Geohack Wiki. And then you've got all the usual Irfan goodness like creating reports with your choice of EXIF/file data etc.

XRY has an option to export to Google Earth (KMZ).
The exported file includes coordinates taken from EXIF data.

Within the last few months I have seen several articles advising the public about the data conained within the photos they take and share with the public via Facebook, Picasa and other sites.
With the newer phones that are Geotagging capable I was wondering if most of them come out of the box with this feature enabled or not? If the phones come out of the box I believe that is a good thing for LE because I have a feeling most people don't know about the information and it means that unless someone made a conscious effort to turn the feature off the photos would contain the data.

Thanks!

iPhone iOS3 had location data permanently ON (provided it was supported) and many commercial SDK devs took data from that centralised distribution point to populate real- or quasi-GPS data into programs, images etc. Concerns over privacy have also grown (similar to hcso1510 above) and issues raised with Apple as I understand it. iPhone iOS4 allows 'mutable data' to be switched OFF for inclusion in EXIF data.

Another tool that I am aware of is Geosetter. It intergrates with a number of mapping services.
