Hello there everyone!
I'm working a case right now where we are trying to put someone at a certain location on a certain day; however, I am having trouble finding ANY GPS location artifacts whatsoever on the physical dump of the phone when looking at the image with Physical Analyzer.
I've looked through the user's texts / calls / searches / everything… can't seem to find anything tracking his location at any point in time. Even the pictures he had taken with his phone don't record GPS that I can see.
Anybody have any luck by chance or have any other advice / suggestions I could use to possibly dig up some location artifacts?
The carrier is US Cellular. Since this incident happened back in early 2014, they say they don't have records back that far.
I also don't have the physical phone on me, only the image… so I'm not sure if turning off GPS altogether is an option on this type of phone.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Location & GPS services is an option within the Settings & Security, therefore if the user has not enabled location services for the device or/and specific applications, then the chances of finding any is minimal.
Something I have recently found useful within Android devices (in general not specifically a SCH-i500) is the 'cache.cell' file located within 'com.google.android.location' in the file system. This file collects Cell Site data inc. MCC, MNC, Cell ID's, long/lat etc. Again, this file may be dependent on if location services is enabled by the user.
That's what I had assumed… thanks for the confirmation, DCS1094!
Also, good info on the cache.cell file. Unfortunately, that specific file isn't present on this particular phone, but good to know in the future!
I really appreciate your help - thank you again.
